After creating all kinds of controversy (when frontman Fred Durst claimed he hooked up with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera) and causing the word “nookie” to become part of our everyday language (not that anyone really knows what it means) in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Limp Bizkit seemingly vanished from the music scene, but after eight years Fred Durst and Limp Bizkit are back with a tour and new album.
The original lineup, comprised of cocky frontman Durst, Wes Borland, Sam Rivers, John Otto and DJ Lethal, haven’t been together since the fall of 2001, after which Borland left the band to work on his own music. Borland did return to the band for the release of their 2004 EP The Unquestionable Truth (Part 1) but then left again, after which point Limp Bizkit has been on a hiatus. In the interim, Durst has been concentrating on acting and directing.
After forming in 1994 when vocalist Fred Durst and bassist Sam Rivers began jamming together, Limp Bizkit was soon hailed the new leader of the rapcore music movement. Rivers’ cousin John Otto (drums) and Wes Borland (guitar) completed the lineup (DJ Lethal joined later on) and they began playing around the Jacksonville area in 1995. Korn bassist Fieldy caught one of their shows and later got several tattoos from Durst (a tattoo artist on the side) and the pair forged a friendship, prompting Korn to pass on Limp Bizkit’s demo tape to their producer, Ross Robinson.
After playing with the Deftones and House of Pain, Limp Bizkit signed with Flip/Interscope in 1997 and soon released their debut full-length album, Three Dollar Bill Y’All. The rap-metal outfit played high-profile gigs and appeared on MTV’s Spring Break ‘98 fashion show in the wake of their debut, but scored their big break with a spot on that summer’s Family Values Tour.
In June 1999 Limp Bizkit released their highly anticipated sophomore album Significant Other. The album debuted at number one and went on to sell over four million copies by the end of the year, largely due to the popularity of lead single “Nookie” and its corresponding music video. In early July Durst became a Senior VP at Interscope but the band’s success was soon overshadowed by negative publicity after their performance at Woodstock ‘99. While the festival was meant to capture the free-loving feeling of the original Woodstock, riots and sexual assaults changed things drastically.
During Limp Bizkit’s performance, Durst urged fans to “break stuff,” a move that was heavily criticized in light of the already-rowdy crowd and disaster that the festival turned into. Woodstock ‘99 organizers pulled the plug on Limp Bizkit’s set but the band nonetheless headlined that year’s Family Values Tour, although internal issues did plague them nonetheless.
When Napster rocked the music work in 2000, Durst became one of the most outspoken advocates of online music trading, sparking Limp Bizkit to launch a free Napster-sponsored tour that summer. That October Limp Bizkit released their third album, Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water. Soon after the album’s release, Borland left the lineup and the band failed to find an adequate replacement.
They released the disappointing album Results May Vary after almost three years of dormancy and then Borland returned for the EP The Unquestionable Truth (Part 1). Although a greatest hits album spanning Limp Bizkit’s career has surfaced in recent years, fans have been waiting until now for a true comeback. Limp Bizkit is slated to play a handful of international festivals this spring, including stops in Eastern Europe as well as Germany’s Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park festivals, although all dates for the band’s trip are not yet confirmed.
